开始今天的TOEFL词汇之前，先聊个老生常谈的话题："公鸡"的英文为什么常用 rooster，而不是 cock？
尽管 cock 自古以来就有公鸡的意思，但18世纪之后衍生出男性生殖器这个词义，所以，为了避免粗俗，用 rooster 一词替代，这也是语言的一种净化现象。
比如中国的生肖鸡年英文就是 Year of the Rooster。
rooster 字面意思为"栖息的鸟"，后专门用来指公鸡， 由动词 roost /ru:st/ 派生而来。

roost 作动词指栖息，作名词指栖身处。
The birds enjoy roosting on lofty perches such as barn roofs.

△Wringer 中文译名《小杀手》或《绞杀者》，是一部获得1998年纽伯瑞银奖的儿童文学作品，讲述了男孩帕尔默·拉鲁 (Palmer LaRue) 在成长过程中面临的道德困境与自我认同的挣扎。
在比喻的语境中， roost 也可以用人作主语，暗示像鸟一样找个地方歇脚或安顿下来，略带幽默色彩 (见文末"小说"部分)。
